Subtle Rush is an ongoing project presented through visual mixtapes. It began as a way to organize frequencies and sources drawn from memory, research, collecting, and the rhythms of mind, heart, body, and spirit. Each mixtape is built around a theme, creating dialogue by sequencing and overlapping multiple sources, with a focus on Black Diasporic experiences that reach beyond the physical. One mixtape is released each year, turning the project into an accumulation of time and knowledge combined into one single work. Subtle Rush is grounded in the belief that all information and education should be universally accessible, interconnected, and continuously revisited. Instead of adopting the Western idea of the “archive,” it rescribes this process as “the reopening and rearranging of records.”
